We Will Survive!
While sales figures for picture books are down and many pundits have proclaimed the picture book to be a thing of the past, I loudly disagree. If you’re reading this I know you also disagree. We all have a friend in Julie Hedlund. If you don’t already know her blog “Write Up My Life,” you’ll be grateful the day you find it.
Julie honored me with the request of writing a guest post this month as part of her 12 X 12 in 12 year-long adventure. You can find my guest post titled “From Flicker to Final Manuscript” at <www.writeupmylife.com>.
Thank you so much, George, for your wonderfully inspiring guest post on Julie’s blog. I am one of the 402 12 x 12ers and I so appreciate the group that Julie’s brainchild has drawn together. If we have anything to say about it, the picture book will live a long, healthy, and happy life.
Thanks again for your contribution to the 12 x 12 journey, and to the picture book world in general.
Thank YOU, George, from another 12x12er. Like Beth (one of the dozens of wonderful children’s writers I’ve met through this challenge), I am eternally grateful to this group, to Julie, and to contributors like you who have given me renewed interest and energy in my writing. Long live the picture book! 🙂
George,
your inspiring blog has become a “favorite” of mine.
yes, i am a 12×12(er). since reading your guest post i’ve
been enjoying my favorite picture books lovingly collected during
my many years teaching 1st grade. i am a published author.
however my 3rd manuscript has met one rejection after another,
even though the story has received positive feedback.
“we are cutting back on picture books because of the printing costs”
is what I am hearing time and again.
Julie’s 12×12 has sparked the spark within and I am writing again…
Yes, WE DO NEED TO SPEAK LOUD AND CLEAR for our picture books!
thank you for your genius, George.
most sincerely,
cristina
A toast to the picture book!

Long may it reign!
Your guest post on Julie’s blog sparked a wonderful discussion with my son about the need for play in writing and in daily life. So many adults forget to enjoy themselves and it affects our jobs, how we parent and our happiness. Thank you so very much for writing. I’m off to play in the snow with my three boys!
Aww, I just saw this. Thanks so much George! You and your books are truly an inspiration to us all. Not to mention this FABULOUS blog! I hope you get many more readers after coming on as a 12 x 12 author. I think all PB writers need to subscribe to your blog!
Of course picture books will not die. Too many folks are seeing the glass have empty.
And with new technologies, we can keep this art form alive for generations to come!
